​The Dorset House History

The Dorset House in Fort Collins was the gem of the street back in the day. With a perfectly organized garage and a yard that was meticulously maintained, there was never a strand of grass longer than the others.

The owner was a retired member of the Air Force, a Larimer County sheriff’s deputy, and a husband and father of two daughters. He suddenly passed away in 1996, leaving maintenance of the home to his widowed wife. She was able to keep up the house and then came into her own ill health in the mid-2000s. Unable to care for the home, the house became unmanageable. 

Typical of the post-war generation, this family held onto belongings. They kept items that had memories, and they were very lucky to have created many memories together.

When the mother and wife of the Dorset House passed away, the home went to the two daughters of the family. One was residing in Texas, and the other daughter resided locally but faced her own health issues that made it overwhelming to sort through the whole house and clean it up. She needed someone to help.

​The Adventure Begins

​We found so many treasures. 

There were old letters and diaries from when the father was in the Air Force and stationed in Korea. There were slideshows of their life growing up together and videos of them on 8-tracks. There were so many family photos. To help preserve their family history, we diligently collected all of the items and gave them to the family. 

There were old books, including an old copy of Pride and Prejudice that was printed in 1903! We even found and old flight suit and some classified Air Force material from the 60s - the materials were destroyed and the flight suit was donated to the local legion.

In addition to all of the fun, personal treasures stashed away, we were able to donate approximately $10,000 worth of healthcare supplies to Good Health Well, have a three-day free garage sale, and even donate one truckful of items to The Arc in Fort Collins.
